First aired: Thursday, October 25, 2007, 10:00 pm
Episode summary by Singapore TV

In 1998, "Peter" suffered heavy losses in shares and owed banks a total of $250,000. Driven to the brink of desperation, he turned to the only people willing to lend him money – the loan sharks. Out of the frying pan, he jumped into the fire. Tab TV looks at his story, typical of many others who end up falling into the snares of loan sharks.

The law in Singapore has recently been tightened to deal with this illegal money-lending activity and in 2006, two loan sharks who were caught, were tried and sentenced to a jail term plus caning.

Tab Chat discusses the issue with a former loan shark, a former loan shark victim and a former police investigator. They touch on how people can be discouraged from going to loan sharks and whether or not anything else should be done to deal with the unlawful and sometimes violent tactics employed by loan sharks in their drive to claim back their money. Lawrence Wong, who’d often acted as loan sharks on TV series, also shares his views on this shady profession.
